Feedback sought: Potential covers for my book

I’ve been experimenting with some different cover designs for On the Moor. I’d be interested in hearing any feedback you might have. The advice from Amazon is to use big text on the cover, so it can still be read when reduced to a minuscule thumbnail image in their store.

I don’t consider any of these potential covers to be finished yet, but I’ll be very interested to hear what you think. In particular, which, if any, of these covers might tempt you to take a peek inside the book to find out more?

  1. Hi Richard,
My daughter and I really like Cover 1. Great colours!
    And clean layout. Good luck!

    Cover 2 for me.

Cover 3: rock, heather and the sweep of the moor.

Number 2 has it all for me.

Spectacular sky, heather, trig point, print clarity.

Covers 3 and 5 work really well for me, they give me the drama and magnetism ofor the moors, but are also aesthetically pleasing in terms of image and design.

I now see that Julia’s commented above, but before reading her thoughts I’d decided on the same two as her, numbers 3 and 5. Although I like the trig point in the first images, it somehow takes up the focus rather than the moor, dominating the landscape at the expense of the subject. And as you know, I’m a big fan of dramatic weather, (especially potentially lethal fogs!), and so number 5 speaks to me on that level. At least in my own experience, the raw elements are such an inescapable aspect of the moors that scenes like this are part of the allure, alongside the great sweep of heather in number 3.

  8. Thanks for all the useful feedback both here and on my Facebook page. As you might have seen, I opted for a variant of cover 3 in the end. This one won the day over the others because of something I hadn’t considered previously: I wanted the cover on the paperback version of the book to wrap round on to the spine and back cover. Cover three was the most suitable for this (and a lot of people seemed to prefer it anyway).
