This predictably named biography of the prolific countryside writer Ronald Blythe, who died shortly after his 100th birthday in 2023, will surely be considered a must-read for his many adoring fans—among whom, I include myself.
Written by Blythe’s close friend and literary executor, Ian Collins, this book contains plenty of the sort of personal gossip that delighted Blythe, but often doesn’t make it into official biographies. It’s an affectionate though not uncritical book, containing walk-on parts by numerous artistic, musical, and literary figures. Fans of Blythe’s deeply spiritual Wormingford series of essays might also be surprised to discover it contains occasional bouts casual sex.
As I say, a must-read for all my fellow Blythe fans.
