I picked up my copy of this book in an excellent second-hand bookshop in Ludlow. It’s a surprisingly entertaining read, presenting selections of documents from acclaimed photographer Walker Evans’s personal archive, including scrapbook entries, lists, postcards, letters to friends, and articles for publication. Evans was an accomplished writer.
The commentary accompanying these extracts from Evans’s archive explores how, in his photography, “the timbre of the time was conveyed with peculiar authenticity through vernacular things”, as well as his knack for “grasping the essence from the detail”.
An unusual, thought-provoking book.
